Vietnam Service Medal Hat/Lapel Pin

The Medal for Vietnam Service (VSM) is a distinguished recognition conferred upon individuals serving in any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces who rendered military service during the Vietnam War and fulfill specific requirements established by the United States Department of Defense. In order to qualify, service members must have completed either 30 consecutive days or 60 non-consecutive days of service directly supporting ground operations or providing maritime assistance during military operations in designated regions of the Republic of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand. These service periods encompass the dates between November 15, 1961, and March 28, 1973, as well as April 29, 1975, to April 30, 1975. Furthermore, U.S. Air Force personnel who conducted missions within Vietnamese airspace are also eligible for this distinction.

The Vietnam Service Medal serves as a replacement for the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (AFEM), which was bestowed for service in Vietnam from 1961 to 1965. For recipients who participated in multiple campaigns throughout the Vietnam War, service stars can be affixed to the Vietnam Service Medal as additional attachments. Those who were involved in aerial or amphibious assaults are permitted to wear the Arrowhead Device on the medal as well.
