Who Wears the 3rd Cavalry Regiment Unit Crest:
Every soldier assigned to the 3rd Cavalry Regiment at Fort Hood, Texas wears this crest on their dress uniform shoulder loops. The regiment currently serves as the III Armored Corps' Cavalry Regiment and is undergoing transformation under the Army's 2025 modernization initiative — transitioning from Stryker vehicles back to an armored formation. When an enlisted trooper greets an officer the trooper calls out "Brave Rifles!" and the officer replies "Veterans!" — a tradition carried since the Mexican-American War of 1847.
About the 3rd Cavalry Regiment — Brave Rifles:
Constituted in 1846 as the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen, the Brave Rifles are one of the oldest continuously serving cavalry regiments in U.S. Army history with over 178 years of combat service. The regiment's motto "Blood and Steel" and nickname "Brave Rifles" were bestowed by General Winfield Scott after the Battle of Chapultepec when he declared: "Brave Rifles! Veterans! You have been baptized in fire and blood and have come out steel!"
The regiment has served with distinction across eleven major conflicts including the Mexican-American War, Civil War, Indian Wars, World Wars I and II, Operation Desert Storm, and multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan under Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. The 3rd Cavalry Regiment is the only regiment in U.S. Army history to have served as a horse mounted cavalry, armored cavalry, air assault, and Stryker brigade combat team throughout its existence.
