Department of Defense Distinguished Service Medal Ribbon

The Defense Distinguished Service Medal (DDSM) is bestowed upon any U.S. Armed Forces member serving within the Department of Defense, demonstrating outstanding performance contributing to national security. Established on July 9th, 1970, by President Richard Nixon's Executive Order 11545, this medal is commonly awarded to senior officers, including the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Chief and Vice Chiefs of the military services, and others in regular contact with high-ranking government officials.
