Defense Distinguished Service Full Size Medal

The Defense Distinguished Service Medal (DDSM) is bestowed upon members of the U.S. Armed Forces serving within the Department of Defense, recognizing exceptional contributions to national security or defense. Established on July 9th, 1970, by President Richard Nixon's Executive Order 11545, this medal is commonly awarded to senior officers, including the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Chief and Vice Chiefs of the military services, and individuals in regular contact with high-ranking government officials such as the Secretary of Defense and Deputy Secretary of Defense.
