Armed Forces Service Full Size Medal

The U.S. military awards the Armed Forces Service Medal (AFSM), established on January 11th, 1996, to individuals engaging in "significant activity" without eligibility for other medals. Theater commanders determine "significant activity" as participation in a U.S. military operation of high scope, impact, and international significance, justifying the medal. The AFSM standard requires a minimum of 30 consecutive days in a theater region for qualification, with aircrew personnel eligible based on 30 mission days in the area.
