Bronze Letter A Device
The Bronze 'A' Device is a distinguished decoration in the U.S. military, available in two distinct versions that are worn as attachments to either the center of the American Defense Service Medal or the Air Force Overseas Service Ribbon.
Originally known as the 'Atlantic Device' or 'Axis Device,' this award was presented to members of the U.S. Navy who engaged in potential armed combat with German naval forces while deployed in the Atlantic Ocean during the undeclared war from June 22 to December 7, 1941. This historical version, awarded alongside the Defense Service Medal, is characterized by the absence of serifs or 'feet' on the letter 'A.'
The decoration has since been reintroduced as the 'Arctic Device,' which is awarded by the U.S. Air Force to service members who have completed tours of duty in Arctic locations and have received the Air Force Overseas Short Tour Service Ribbon. The current version features serifs or 'feet' on the letter 'A,' distinguishing it from its predecessor.
