3/16" Gold Star Device
Gold Star Devices, commonly called award stars, are decoration attachments used by U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard personnel to signify multiple awards of the same decoration. For example, if a service member receives three Achievement Medals, their service record will display the Achievement Medal with two gold award stars. Award stars serve a similar function to oak leaf clusters, which are used in the Army and Air Force.
Award stars come in two types: gold and silver, with silver representing the higher degree as per U.S. military tradition. Silver stars are awarded in place of five gold stars, meaning a silver star is given for the 6th, 11th, 16th, and subsequent awards of the same decoration. No higher degrees are authorized beyond five silver stars.
Award stars are exclusively issued for individual medals earned for combat or meritorious actions and are not given for service medals, which are designated with service stars.
