Marksmanship Devices are prestigious attachments awarded by the U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard to honor marksmanship excellence on the Marksmanship Ribbon. The Navy and Coast Guard use two distinct devices to signify Sharpshooter or Expert scores on pistol and rifle qualification courses. The Sharpshooter Marksmanship Device, or 'S Device,' is a bronze 'S' for the Navy and a silver 'S' for the Coast Guard. The Expert Marksmanship Device, or 'E Device,' is a silver 'E,' distinct from the 'Battle E Device,' and is worn on the Marksmanship Ribbon in place of the full-sized Marksmanship Medal. In the Air Force, bronze Service Stars represent expert qualifications in both rifle and service pistol, showcasing the high level of skill achieved.
