The Silver Star Device is a type of service star, also referred to as campaign stars, engagement stars, or battle stars. A service star is a U.S. military decoration attachment that indicates participation in military campaigns or multiple awards of the same decoration. These devices are typically awarded for campaign medals, service medals, ribbon awards, and specific military badges. Unlike award stars, which are given for meritorious or combat-related decorations, service stars are issued for campaign or service-related achievements. The military awards both bronze and silver service stars, with silver stars being issued in place of five bronze stars.

• Campaign Star: For example, on a campaign medal, six campaigns served would be denoted by one silver and one bronze service star. In certain cases, such as the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, recipients are entitled to at least one campaign star. Therefore, an Afghanistan Campaign Medal without at least one bronze star would not meet regulations.
  
  
• Service Star: For example, two awards of the National Defense Service Medal would be indicated by the medal with one bronze service star. Typically, service stars are awarded after the second award of a decoration.
