The Coast Guard Expert Rifle Medal stands as the highest recognition attainable for rifle qualification among Coast Guardsmen. Currently, the approved rifles for qualification are the M16A2, M4, or the M14-T. This prestigious medal is only worn by those who have achieved "expert" status with a qualifying weapon. If the expert status is attained, the service ribbon is adorned with a silver E device. A blank ribbon is worn for the Marksman qualification, while a bronze S device signifies the Sharpshooter qualification. Originating in 1969, the typical qualification tests involve shooting in various positions, including kneeling, standing, and prone.
