Armed Forces Service Medal Ribbon

Qualification Guidelines:

The Armed Forces Service Medal (AFSM) is a distinction within the U.S. military, established on January 11th, 1996. It is conferred upon individuals engaged in "significant activity" where no other service or campaign medal is applicable. The determination of "significant activity" is at the discretion of theater commanders, typically involving participation in a U.S. military operation of substantial scope, impact, and international importance, justifying the bestowal of a permanent service medal.

The individual requirement for the AFSM specifies that a service member must complete a minimum of 30 consecutive days in a designated geographical theater to qualify for the decoration. Aircrew personnel may qualify by accumulating 30 mission days, involving flights into and out of the specified area.

As a Department of Defense exception, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the AFSM can be concurrently awarded for Operations in Yugoslavia: Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia, and Hungary (Operation Joint Guard) from December 20, 1996, to June 20, 1998; and Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia, Italy, Hungary (Operation Joint Endeavor) from November 20, 1995, to December 19, 1998. The AFSM was also granted to U.S. Forces for Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita relief efforts, requiring 30 consecutive or 60 accumulated days of service from August 27, 2005, to February 27, 2006. Additional recognitions on the AFSM are indicated by service stars.
