Air Force Overseas Ribbon Long Tour
Eligibility Criteria:
The Air Force Overseas Service Ribbon (AFOLT & AFOST) comes in two variations, namely the Long Tour and Short Tour versions, and both have been authorized for simultaneous wear since their establishment in 1980.
The Short Tour ribbon is typically granted for a permanent duty station assignment lasting a minimum of 300 days within an 18-month period. An example of this is the tours undertaken by many Airmen in South Korea, a prevalent short tour assignment. However, exceptions to the 300-day requirement exist, especially for deployments to hostile environments. Between 2003 and 2011, many Airmen saw a reduction in the requirement to 181 days for hazardous tours.
The Long Tour ribbon is presented upon the successful completion of a standard overseas service assignment, typically exceeding two years in duration. It is also conferred upon any service member assigned overseas duty (including combat tours) for durations exceeding 365 days, occurring multiple times within a 3-year period.
Accumulated awards of the ribbons are indicated by the Oak Leaf Cluster device affixed to the service ribbon. The Short Tour ribbon also features an "A" device, specifically approved for airmen who have served their tours in Arctic-based facilities.
