Criteria: 
The Air Force Commendation Medal (AFCM) stands as a commendation of mid-level distinction, awarded for extended acts of heroism or meritorious service. Local commanders have the authority to present this medal, allowing for a broad interpretation of the criteria meriting its bestowal. In instances of valorous actions in direct contact with an enemy force, the "V" device, denoting valor, may be authorized as an attachment to the decoration. It is noteworthy that the "V" device was not authorized until 1996; before that, there was no valor distinction for the Air Force Commendation Medal. Initially introduced by the U.S. Air Force in 1958, subsequent awards are marked by oak leaf clusters.
