Air Force Commendation Full Size Anodized Medal
The Air Force Commendation Medal (AFCM) is an intermediate-level award recognizing sustained acts of heroism or meritorious service. Local commanders have the authority to interpret the criteria for granting the medal, allowing flexibility in its application. For acts of valor in direct contact with an enemy force, the Valor device ("V" device) may be attached to the decoration. The "V" device was authorized in 1996, and prior to that, there was no Valor distinction for the Air Force Commendation Medal. First issued by the U.S. Air Force in 1958, additional awards are indicated by oak leaf clusters.
