Bronze Star Device

The Bronze Star Device is a type of service star, also known as campaign stars, engagement stars, or battle stars. A service star is a U.S. military decoration attachment that represents participation in military campaigns or multiple awards of the same decoration. These devices are commonly awarded for campaign medals, service medals, ribbon awards, and specific military badges. Service stars differ from award stars, which are given for multiple awards of meritorious and combat-related decorations. The U.S. military issues bronze and silver service stars, with silver stars replacing five bronze stars.

• Campaign Star: For instance, on a campaign medal, six campaigns served would be indicated by one silver and one bronze service star. In some cases, such as the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, each recipient is entitled to at least one campaign star. Therefore, an Afghanistan Campaign Medal without at least one bronze star would not comply with regulations.
  
  
• Service Star: For example, two awards of the National Defense Service Medal would be denoted by the medal with one bronze service star. Service stars are generally awarded after the second decoration of the same type.
