3/16" Four Gold Star Device
Gold Star Devices, commonly known as award stars, are decoration attachments used by the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard to denote multiple awards of the same honor. For example, a service member who has received three Achievement Medals would have one medal with two gold award stars to signify the additional awards. Similar to oak leaf clusters used by the Army and Air Force, award stars indicate repeated recognitions.
Award stars are issued in two types: gold and silver. Silver stars represent a higher level and are issued in place of five gold stars, symbolizing the 6th, 11th, 16th award, and so forth. No further degrees are authorized beyond five silver stars.
These award stars are designated solely for individual medals awarded for combat or meritorious actions and are not issued for service medals, which instead receive service stars.
