The Legion of Merit Medal (LM, LOM) is a distinguished decoration conferred by the United States Armed Forces on members of the U.S. Military, foreign military individuals, and political leaders for outstanding services and achievements marked by exceptionally meritorious conduct. The recognition is reserved for performances that significantly surpass standard expectations. When awarded to foreign recipients, it is categorized into distinct degrees: Chief Commander for heads of state or government; Commander for chiefs of staff or equivalent positions; Officer for generals or flag officers below the chief of staff, colonel, or equivalent rank; and Legionnaire for all other service members ranking lower than the aforementioned positions.
