Four Bronze Star Device
The Bronze Star Device is a type of service star, also known as campaign stars, engagement stars, or battle stars. A service star is a U.S. military decoration attachment used to indicate participation in military campaigns or multiple awards of the same decoration. These devices are most commonly awarded for campaign medals, service medals, ribbon awards, and specific military badges. Unlike award stars, which recognize multiple meritorious or combat-related decorations, service stars are issued for campaign and service-related achievements. The U.S. military awards both bronze and silver service stars, with silver stars issued in place of five bronze stars.

Campaign Star: For example, on a campaign medal, six campaigns served would be represented by one silver and one bronze service star. In some cases, such as the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, each recipient is entitled to at least one campaign star. Therefore, an Afghanistan Campaign Medal without at least one bronze star would not comply with military regulations.

Service Star: For example, two awards of the National Defense Service Medal would be represented by the medal with one bronze service star. Service stars are typically awarded after the second decoration of the same type.
