Air Force Commendation Mini Medal
The Air Force Commendation Medal (AFCM) is a mid-level award bestowed for sustained acts of heroism or meritorious service. Local commanders have the authority to interpret the criteria for awarding the medal, allowing for flexibility. The Valor device ("V" device) may be added for valorous actions in direct contact with an enemy force, with its authorization beginning in 1996. Prior to that, there was no Valor distinction for the Air Force Commendation Medal, first issued in 1958, with subsequent awards marked by oak leaf clusters.
