Air Force Commendation Full Size Medal
The Air Force Commendation Medal (AFCM) is an intermediate-level award granted for sustained acts of heroism or meritorious service. Local commanders have the discretion to interpret the criteria for awarding the medal. For valorous actions in direct contact with an enemy force, the Valor device ("V" device) may be attached to the decoration. The "V" device was authorized in 1996; before that, there was no Valor distinction for the Air Force Commendation Medal, which was first issued in 1958. Additional awards are indicated by oak leaf clusters.
